As a general rule, when mixing two different patterns, we must keep the prints as equal in size and boldness as possible. The only exception to this rule happens when we are mixing two different small patterns. In this case, one of the two will have to be bigger in order to preserve the harmony of the outfit.

Image one illustrates the proportioned scale of the patterns. The horizontal stripes are equal in size to the plaid of the suit, bringing geometric harmony to the ensemble.

Image two shows how a bold checkered suit can be paired with a bold striped shirt. Once again, the tie frames the whole outfit by bringing in the same color as the suit’s detail.

Image three shows how the spacing of the tie, which is larger than the pinstripe of the suit, keeps the outfit from looking too busy.
